Safety - What the Auto Press Says

With a lengthy list of safety features and high scores in federal government crash tests, the Impreza is a good choice for "everyone who recognizes their own mortality," About.com writes. The 2008 model also earned recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety as a "Top Safety Pick" for good performance in front, side and rear tests with the optional Vehicle Dynamics Control system.

In government crash tests, the newest Impreza earned five out of a possible five stars for driver and front passenger protection in front impact crashes. In side impact crashes, the 2008 Impreza earned five stars for front seat occupant protection, four stars for backseat occupant protection and a four-star rollover rating.

Accident Avoidance

The Impreza gets a lot of attention for its standard all-wheel drive. About.com calls it an underrated safety feature. "Though it's best known for its ability to keep a car moving in bad weather," the review notes, "the truth is that even when the roads are bone-dry, as they were during my week with the Impreza, AWD can save your life." The 2008 Impreza also has four-wheel anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake force Distribution, daytime running lights and a tire pressure monitoring system standard. Traction Control and Vehicle Dynamics Control systems are offered optional.

Crash Protection

Dual driver and front-passenger front air bags with an occupant sensor are standard on the 2008 Subaru Impreza, as are side-curtain and seat-mounted front side-impact air bags. The Impreza also has a ring-shaped reinforced body frame with a hydroformed front subframe structure with front and rear crumple zones.
