Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The federal government gives the 2009 Tribeca top five-star scores for all seating positions in both frontal and side crash tests. The Tribeca is one of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's "Top Safety Picks" due to its good performance in crash tests and standard electronic stability control. After complaints about rearward visibility in the 2007 Tribeca, Subaru added larger side mirrors and reshaped side windows in the rear -- but some reviewers still complain about visibility issues. Another downside, however, is that Subaru doesn't offer side curtain airbags for the optional third row.

  • "Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags that cover the first two seating rows, and front side airbags. Rear-obstacle detection and a navigation system with rearview camera are available, as is remote engine start." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Rear vision. Still poor. Shouldn't be, Subie says. Larger way-back side windows and bigger outside mirrors should have taken care of that." -- USA Today
  • "While fluffy creature comforts might be lacking, the Tribeca scores bonus points on safety. Nobody doubts any Subaru's sturdy construction -- it's kind of a no-brainer. These things are built like tanks." -- Mother Proof
