Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Grand Vitara earns four out of five stars for driver and passenger safety in frontal crashes conducted by the federal government -- but note that most competitors earn five stars. It earns five stars for front- and rear-seat safety in side crashes. Moreover, the Grand Vitara earns a four-star rollover score, which is good for an SUV, and means it has an 18 or 19 percent chance of rollover in a single vehicle crash.

In insurance industry tests, the 2010 Grand Vitara earns a top rating of "Good" in frontal impact tests but receives scores of just "Acceptable" in side impact and roof strength tests. Even worse, it receives a rating of "Marginal" in rear crash protection tests.

Standard safety features are impressive for such an affordable vehicle and include an Electronic Stability Program with Traction Control System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution and front and rear curtain airbags. A rear vision camera is optional for all but the base and Premium models.

  • "I was also impressed with the Grand Vitara's lineup of airbags, which includes dual-stage front airbags, front-seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags. I also appreciated knowing the car was outfitted with an electronic stability system and a tire pressure monitoring system. It's good to know Suzuki doesn't skimp on safety to keep prices down." -- Mother Proof
  • "Rear visibility is hindered by thick rear roof pillars and tall front headrests; the rear headrests retract below the driver's sight line." -- Consumer Guide
