Used Car: 2012 Suzuki SX4 Review
Although it’s one of the few small cars available with all-wheel drive, the 2012 Suzuki SX4 falls short with poor safety and reliability scores, as well as a cabin constructed with cheap materials.
The 2012 SX4, available as a sedan or hatchback, is powered by a four-cylinder engine, which is paired with either a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT). The engine received mixed reviews, as some critics were pleased with the power, while others thought the SX4 feels a bit sluggish. Most agreed that either transmission choice lacks the refinement of transmissions in rival vehicles. Still, most said the SX4 has decent ride quality, though some said it can feel jarring over rough roads. A front-wheel drive SX4 with the CVT achieves 25/32 mpg city/highway, which isn’t all that spectacular for the class. An all-wheel drive 2012 Subaru Impreza achieves better fuel economy.
Most reviewers agreed that the SX4’s cabin falls short of rivals’, with an old design and cheap materials throughout. For the most part, critics said the SX4’s seats offer sufficient comfort and space, but some noted that taller passengers might be short on legroom. They liked the SX4’s spacious back seat as well. The base SX4 does not come standard with features like a stereo or air conditioning, but they are available. Other available features include cruise control, keyless entry, navigation and Bluetooth. The sedan offers 15.5 cubic feet of trunk space, while the hatchback has 51.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the second row folded. Both figures are very good for small cars.
Other Cars to Consider
If all-wheel drive is a priority, the 2012 Subaru Impreza has it standard. Reviewers also gave the Impreza’s interior much more praise than they did the SX4’s cabin, and it earns a much better safety score.
Though not available with all-wheel drive, the 2012 Ford Focus was liked by critics, who said it delivers refined, agile handing and a high-quality interior. It also has great safety and reliability scores.
