Exterior - What the Auto Press Says
The FJ's striking, retro looks are among the best in its class. The Detroit Free Press calls it "the best-looking, hippest, gone-daddy-gone coolest thing to roll out of a Toyota showroom since the original 1985 MR2."
While some call it "cartoonish" and think it's over the top, its daring exterior style generally solicits rave reviews. As U.S. News' Rick Newman observes, "The boxy shape and bulky fenders and retro round headlights conjure up a safari vehicle--or a Hummer lite. It certainly gets attention." And The Los Angeles Times notes that "this is an almost irresistible design."
According to Toyota, exterior features include two-tone exterior color and a white roof; black bumpers with metallic silver trim; two full doors and two access doors with silver trim door handles; and standard 17-inch black steel wheels with P265/70R17 tires. New Car Test Drive explains, "Viewed in profile, the most noticeable aspects of the FJ Cruiser are its upright windshield, tall and protective body sides, short windows and very wide C-pillar on either side of the cargo area." For 2008, the FJ loses the Black Cherry Pearl exterior color and gets two new colors -- Brick Red and Sandstorm.
The FJ Cruiser's "suicide doors" have also attracted a lot attention, and U.S. News' Rick Newman notes that they are problematic because "you always have to open the front doors before you open the rear ones."
