Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser receives high scores in both government and insurance industry crash tests.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser five out of five stars for front driver crash protection and four out of five for front passenger protection. The two-wheel and four-wheel drive FJ Cruisers earned three stars in the NHTSA rollover rating. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety give the 2008 FJ Cruiser a rating of "good" for frontal offset test results and "good" for side impact test results.
Accident Avoidance
The FJ Cruiser is equipped with standard Star Safety System TM -- which includes Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control; 4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD); and Brake Assist.
Some reviews focus on the Toyota FJ Cruiser's poor visibility factor. Edmunds lists limited visibility as a con, and Autoweb notes that "Visibility is terrible -- front, sides, and rear. Pull up too close at an intersection, and you can't see the traffic light overhead...Rear visibility is compromised by a wide range of form-over-function design elements." USA Today also quips that "Toyota's FJ Cruiser SUV has so many blind spots it ought to come with a white cane." Consumer Guide also mentions poor visibility "to the right-rear and dead astern" and suggests the optional rear obstacle detection as a remedy.
Crash Protection
The USA Today notes that the FJ Cruiser's "air bags and electronic systems are confidence-inspiring." Driver and front passenger dual stage air bags are standard, and driver and front passenger front seat-mounted side air bags and front- and second-row side curtain air bags are optional. Also included are seatbelt pretensioners and Child Restraint System top tether anchors and ISO-FIX lower anchor points.
Active Traction Control (for 4WD models) is available as part of the Upgrade Packages. Kelley Blue Book explains that "By automatically applying the brakes to a spinning wheel, Toyota's active traction control system forces torque to the opposing wheel and boosts the FJ Cruiser's off-road capability."
