Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The federal government gives the 2010 FJ Cruiser a top five-star score for driver safety and four stars for passenger safety in frontal crash tests, and five stars for both front- and rear-seat safety in side crash tests. However, the FJ receives only a three-star rollover score, which means it has a 25 to 26 percent chance of rollover -- and this is in a class where many SUVs earn four stars. On the plus side, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2009 model a "Top Safety Pick" for its top scores of "Good" in both frontal offset and both side impact tests. It even gets a score of "Good" in rear crash protection tests.
Standard safety features include Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-Lock Brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, driver and front passenger dual-stage airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and front- and second-row roll-sensing side curtain airbags. Visibility, however, isn't great due to the FJ's many blind spots. If it's a problem for you, Toyota offers a backup camera as part of the Convenience Package or a Rear Intuitive Parking Assist as part of the Upgrade Package 1.
- "New for 2009 is a roll-sensing feature that works with the side-impact and side curtain airbags to deploy them in the event of a rollover. Active head restraints are also new; they move forward in a collision to restrict head movement." -- Cars.com
- "Visibility is terrible -- front, sides, and rear. Pull up too close at an intersection, and you can't see the traffic light overhead...Rear visibility is compromised by a wide range of form-over-function design elements." -- Autoweb
- "Toyota's FJ Cruiser SUV has so many blind spots it ought to come with a white cane." -- USA Today
