Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid does well in federal government crash tests, earning a top score of five stars for driver safety and four stars for passenger safety in frontal tests. In side crash tests, it gets five stars for both front- and rear-seat safety. It also receives four-star rollover scores, which is good for an SUV and means it has only a 17 percent (4WD model) or 19 percent (2WD) chance of rollover in a single vehicle crash. The insurance industry has not tested the hybrid model, but gives the non-hybrid 2010 Highlander top scores of "Good" in frontal offset, side impact and rear crash protection tests.

The Highlander Hybrid's standard safety features are impressive and include such rare-for-the-class equipment as three-row roll-sensing side curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Other features include Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist and Hill Start Assist Control. A backup camera is standard on Sport and Limited models.

  • "Forward visibility is good thanks to an elevated seating position. Rear visibility is impaired by 2nd-row headrests and thick rear roof pillars." -- Consumer Guide
