Toyota Land Cruiser - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser ranks 4 out of 11 Luxury Large SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 21 published reviews and test drives of the Toyota Land Cruiser, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is well-mannered on-road and ruggedly capable when the pavement ends.

With its strong combination of on-road refinement and off-road chops, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a good choice for buyers who want a luxury SUV, but who also want to go off-road.  In fact, reviewers say the Land Cruiser shoots right down the middle and hits its mark. Its ride and handling are plush but composed.  Thanks to its powerful V8 engine, the Land Cruise scoots better than its size might suggest and gets gas mileage that's about average for the class (though no SUV in the class has gas mileage that could be considered good).

Still, the Land Cruiser stands out in one way: in a class full of vaunted marquees like Land Rover and Mercedes, the Land Cruiser is a humble Toyota. Despite its humble brand, the Land Cruiser isn't the least expensive SUV in its class; in fact, the Range Rover Sport, from the Legendary Land Rover Brand, costs less. The Land Cruiser also competes closely with the Lexus LX, which is based on the Land Cruiser.  While the Land Cruiser costs less than the LX, badge snobs might be drawn to the Lexus name.

However, when the chips are down, the Land Cruiser competes well with its more-pedigreed competition. Reviewers like how it drives and its cushy interior. Taken as a whole, the Land Cruiser stands up well to the competition, even as consumers move away from full-size SUVs.  Still some reviewers question if this Toyota's capabilities are worth its price tag, given that most owners won't take theirs off-road.

The Land Cruiser was last redesigned in 2008.  Changes for 2010 are minimal; as a result, this review uses data from the 2008 and 2009 model years.

  • The "Toyota Land Cruiser may cost a pretty penny, but its combination of impressive off-road ability and on-road comfort is rare." -- Edmunds
  • "Over all, if you can cope with the Land Cruiser's high price, low mileage, monolithic size and amorphous shape, it offers some rewards. It will climb mountains like a Sherpa, haul heavy cargo and probably outlive its driver. But if the aim is only to make a statement with the car pool, the overcapable Land Cruiser is notably inappropriate, akin to hunting squirrels with a bazooka." -- New York Times
  • "It's larger than Toyota's Highlander and 4Runner midsize SUVs and smaller than the full-size Sequoia, and the Land Cruiser is more expensive than all three. " -- Cars.com
  • "With a starting price of $64,755, the . . . Toyota Land Cruiser is a certifiable luxury proposition that only gets close to grime when tackling a grass-covered hill at the local little-league soccer field. Yet in spite of its juggernaut proportions and new personality, after a week in the 'Cruiser, it's obvious why Toyota's biggest SUV sells: it's a giant Camry that seats eight and eats volcanoes." -- Autoblog
  • "For discerning consumers who yearn for a refined on-road vehicle that can roll up its pants and wade into the muck at will, the Land Cruiser in many ways is more fulfilling of that promise than a Land Rover product." -- Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Land-Cruiser Performance - 8.9 (Very Good)

BusinessWeek reports that the Land Cruiser "joins quite a few other models in the SUV field by supplementing its heavy-duty hardware with some electronic gizmos that increase stability during some of the most precarious off-road maneuvers." That technology is also put to good use on road, where the Land Cruiser is composed and comfortable.  Read More

The Land Cruiser looks like a traditional SUV, which is fine with most reviewers "There are no heroic Nissan Murano-like experiments with styling here, just a clean modernization of the concept," says Car and Driver.   Read More

Despite its hard-to-stow seats and a third-row only fit for kids, the Land Cruiser's interior is one of the best in the class. "Every convenience item known to the driving public has been integrated in a properly mature fashion, with sensible controls laid out in an unostentatious manner," says Car and Driver. Read More
