2010 Toyota Prius Performance

The Prius has received a slight power boost for 2010, and reviewers say it's easy to feel. The car's handling, while still somewhat artificial, strikes most test drivers as more natural than the feel of the previous model. But the big news is fuel economy. The 2010 Prius can be set to three different driving modes, each of which offers different performance characteristics and different efficiency figures. While the EPA says the Prius should manage 51/48 mpg city/highway, many reviewers say they've beaten that number.

Acceleration and Power

The 1.5-liter engine of the previous Prius has been replaced for 2010 with a new 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The car's electric motor has also seen a boost. The combination is now good for 134 horsepower -- a significant improvement over the previous car's 110 horsepower. Reviewers say the power boost is evident, though the Prius is still no sports car. Those looking for a hybrid with a bit more speed might want to note that the Ford Fusion Hybrid beats the Prius in most performance testing.

For the first time, however, Prius owners will have the option of selecting more, or less, power, depending on current needs. The 2010 Prius offers three driving modes -- Eco, Power, and EV. In Eco mode, the car is most fuel-efficient, but accelerates more slowly than most four-cylinder midsize cars. In power mode, it is least efficient, but quicker away from a stoplight. EV mode, which turns off the gasoline engine completely and operates on battery power alone, is available only at very low speeds and for a limited time. In cold weather, it’s often not available at all. But it is useful for navigating parking lots without using any gas. The Honda Insight offers similar driving modes.

Drivers can page between several displays in the instrument cluster that aim to coach you toward more fuel-efficient driving.

Handling and Braking

Like most hybrids, the 2010 Prius still uses electrically-assisted steering. Many reviewers dislike these systems, saying they lack the road feel most drivers are accustomed to from hydraulically-assisted steering systems. But many say the 2010 Prius offers more road feel than the car it replaces. Reviewers find a significant difference between the standard 15-inch wheels and available 17-inch wheels. While the larger wheels come with a slight fuel economy penalty, most reviewers say they give the car more grip, and lower levels of road noise, that make the added investment worthwhile.

The Prius uses regenerative braking, recapturing braking energy to recharge its batteries. Reviewers say the result is a soft pedal feel, but braking performance is still strong. This comment is common among hybrids, though.

Unfortunately, you can feel this happen when you apply the brake. There's a slight squish, then the brakes kick in with relatively good grip.
