Safety - What the Auto Press Says

Neither the federal government nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released any crash test results for the 2010 Toyota Prius.  The Prius comes standard with driver's and passenger's side front- and front-side airbags, as well as full-length head-curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Stability and traction control are standard equipment as well.  The front seats feature anti-whiplash active headrests.

Several safety systems are available for an additional price.  A new lane-departure warning system is offered.  On higher trim levels, a pre-collision system is optional.  It uses radar to attempt to predict frontal collisions, and responds by priming airbags, cinching seatbelts and applying brakes in an attempt to lessen impact.

  • "Lane Keep Assist (LKA) is triggered by pressing a steering wheel-mounted button that turns on the Lane Departure Warning system. The system looks for yellow and white lines on the pavement and lets the driver know if he or she starts to leave the lane. Lane Keep Assist is used in conjunction with the Prius' Dynamic Cruise Control, but it won't drive for you. The system knows if you let go of the wheel and using a turn signal will disengage LKA entirely." -- Autoblog
