Used Car: 2010 Toyota Yaris Review
The 2010 Toyota Yaris has a good reliability rating, comes with a lot of safety features and doesn’t use a ton of gas, but a cramped rear seat and below-average safety scores keep it from the top of the class.
The 2010 Toyota Yaris is ranked:
- #10 in Used Small Cars under $12K
- #23 in Used Hatchbacks under $15K
- #16 in 2010 Affordable Small Cars
- #12 in 2010 Hatchbacks
If you need a small hatchback or sedan for navigating city streets, the 2010 Toyota Yaris is worth a look. It comes with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that isn’t very fast, but reviewers said it does fine in city traffic. Plus, the Yaris has good fuel economy ratings of up to 29/36 mpg city/highway.
The Yaris doesn’t have many standard features. The base model doesn’t come with a stereo, while others in the class do. Higher trims and option packages add features like power windows and door locks, keyless entry and a stereo with MP3 playback capabilities, USB and auxiliary jacks and satellite radio. In terms of safety features, the base model comes with electronic stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution. The Yaris’ crash test scores, however, are below-average in the class.
The Yaris isn’t very large, so tall passengers will be cramped in the back. The hatchback comes in two- and four-door models and the four-door makes getting in and out of the back seat much easier. Both the sedan and hatchback have good cargo space for subcompacts, with the hatchback having the most space overall.
While the Yaris doesn’t have the most interior space or the highest safety scores in the class, it’s still a worthy choice if you want an inexpensive small car with good fuel economy and reliability ratings that can handle city life.

Other Cars to Consider
The 2010 Hyundai Elantra sedan, which was the 2010 U.S. News Best Compact Car for the Money, has some of the most comfortable passenger accommodations in the class, as well as a huge trunk. Like the Yaris, the Elantra has good fuel economy ratings and makes a good city car. While the Elantra doesn’t have as many standard safety features as the Yaris, it does have a better crash test scores.
The 2010 Ford Focus can come with a lot more tech features than the Yaris, including a voice-activated infotainment system. The Focus also has a better safety rating, though its reliability score is a little lower than the Yaris’. Like the Yaris, the Focus makes a good city car, but it also has more power for highway passing and merging.
