Used Car: 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Review

Review Last Updated: 7/31/12

The Volkswagen Jetta trumps most 2010 small cars with a powerful engine, a well-equipped interior and comfortable seating, but an unimpressive reliability rating keeps the Jetta from rising to the top of the class.

The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta is ranked:

The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta offers impressive performance, as well as excellent safety scores and comfortable seating. Adding to its appeal is the TDI trim, which has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that gets 30/42 mpg city/highway. The base model’s 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine gets up to 24/32 mpg city/highway. Test drivers were impressed with the performance from both engines, but many preferred the diesel engine for its great fuel economy.

The Jetta is equipped with more features than most competitors. The base model has air conditioning, cruise control, an eight-speaker stereo and an auxiliary input jack. The Jetta also has available Bluetooth, a USB port and navigation, depending on the trim. Its list of safety features includes standard electronic stability control, which isn’t standard on a lot of 2010 small cars. The Jetta also has good crash test scores.

Few models in the class have the combination of performance and standard features that you’ll find on the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. However, the Jetta’s reliability score is below-average for the class.

Other Cars to Consider

The highly-rated 2010 Honda Civic isn’t as upscale as the Jetta, but it is one of the most practical small cars available. It has a quality interior, great safety scores and better reliability than the Jetta. The Civic doesn’t offer a diesel engine, but it has good gas mileage, and reviewers said it has solid performance for a small car. If you want a well-equipped Civic, you will have to choose a higher trim because the base model doesn’t have as many interior amenities or standard safety features as the Jetta.

The 2010 Hyundai Elantra is another of the highest-ranked small cars. It was named the 2010 U.S. News Best Compact Car for the Money, thanks to its high standing with reviewers, as well as its good reliability ratings and ownership costs. Inside, the Elantra has one of the most comfortable second rows in the class, as well as a large trunk. While the Elantra doesn’t have as many standard features as the Jetta, it still impressed reviewers for being a dependable city car with high fuel economy ratings and good highway passing power. It also has strong safety scores.
