2007 Volkswagen New Beetle Interior

This interior review was written when the 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle was new.

The 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle interior is hailed by auto writers as pleasantly designed and comfortable up front. But the Beetle is notoriously short on rear seat space and cargo room.

The 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle is "actually quite comfortable as a daily driver," says Kelley Blue Book, but has "most lop-sided interior dimensions of any car in its class," with class-leading amounts of headroom for the tall, a tight backseat, a deep and a long dash.

The New Beetle gets a lot of praise for interior design, however, which most people consider cool and slightly quirky. Automobile Magazine reports that the interior of the 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle is "typical VW, with high-quality materials predominant, even if others are catching up with Volkswagen's once class-leading take on dash plastic."

Seating

Auto writers agree when it comes to interior space, or lack of, in the 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman says the Beetle's "high top and low front produce an odd passenger compartment," while the New Beetle is filled with tons of headroom, the dashboard "travels a long way before it meets up with the windshield way out in front." "It took me a while to get comfortable with the New Beetle's driving position because the driver sits well back in the car and the windshield is far forward," finds the Kansas City Star, "The deep dash made me feel almost as if I were driving a small minivan."

"Technically speaking," continues U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman "children will fit in the rear seat. But even they won't be comfortable." Kelley Blue Book reports that the "seats are some of the most comfortable we've experienced, with excellent back, side and thigh support for both driver and passenger." "Getting in back is rather easy because the front seats tilt forward to open roomy aisles," says the Chicago Tribune auto writers, "Yet those sentenced to the back seat have precious little room, especially for the melon unless they open the hatchback lid and stick their head out."

Interior Features

The 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle comes standard with a 3-spoke padded wheel, AM/FM satellite-ready radio with CD and MP3, standard black mats and black leatherette seats. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman reports "a neat fade feature on the Monsoon stereo system when you switch radio stations." The 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle 2.5-liter comes with the clear inspiration pod standard, or the more familiar flower vase.

Cargo

Not surprisingly, lack of cargo space is a frequent complaint. Kelley Blue Book calls the cargo area "tiny." U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman says, "You'll be lucky if you can fit a diaper bag in the "trunk." The Chicago Tribune cites the trunk space as "limited to a couple small suitcases. For more room, the rear set backs fold--after removing the headrests and flipping seat bottom cushions forward."
