Used Car: 2009 Volkswagen Passat Review

Review Last Updated: 7/30/12

The 2009 Volkswagen Passat has the interior space, features and safety ratings many families are looking for in their next used sedan. But with one of the worst reliability ratings in its class and low fuel economy estimates, the 2009 Passat will likely cost more to own and maintain than rival 2009 midsize cars.

The 2009 Volkswagen Passat is ranked:

Auto critics liked that the 2009 Volkswagen Passat was loaded with standard features when it was new, including a power moonroof, heated windshield wiper nozzles, leatherette seats, heated front seats, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack. Additionally, test drivers said the 2009 Passat’s good driving dynamics and sporty handling made it fun to drive.

Though auto critics agreed that the 2009 Passat has plenty of space and an upscale, feature-filled cabin, its low fuel economy and reliability ratings may overshadow its positive attributes.

The 2009 Volkswagen Passat has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. Six airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control are standard on the 2009 Passat. Rear-seat side airbags were optional when the 2009 Passat was new, so you might find them on some used models.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Ford Fusion is a highly-ranked used affordable midsize car thanks in part to its stellar reliability score and high safety rating. Like the Passat, the Fusion was liked by test drivers for its athletic handling and sufficient engine power. The 2009 Passat is only available in one trim level with one powertrain, so if you prefer a V6 engine or all-wheel drive, the 2009 Fusion offers more versatility. The used Fusion also tends to be priced less than the used Passat.

The 2009 Honda Accord has some of the highest safety scores in its class, and its reliability rating is better than the Passat’s. Reviewers agreed that the 2009 Accord sedan is roomy and practical, and they liked its high-quality interior. The 2009 Accord is also available in a coupe model if you’re shopping for a sportier-looking car and don’t need four doors.
