2013 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid Review

This review was written when the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid was new.

Test drivers say the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid has great power, an upscale interior and gets fairly good fuel economy, but it doesn’t come cheap.

The Touareg Hybrid impresses reviewers with its muscular hybrid powertrain. They say it accelerates quickly, and despite its power, returns fairly good fuel economy. The VW Touareg Hybrid's gas mileage is rated at 20/24 mpg city/highway by the EPA. It comes standard with all-wheel drive, and auto writers say its suspension offers a good balance of comfortable ride quality and composed handling. Test drivers also like its smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Keep in mind that the Touareg Hybrid has a lower-than-average reliability score for the class.

Test drivers say the 2013 VW Touareg Hybrid’s five-seat cabin uses high-quality materials that are soft to the touch. They say its front seats are comfortable for the long haul and that the back seats are both comfortable and spacious. The Touareg Hybrid is well-equipped, with standard features like heated leather seats, navigation, Bluetooth, an iPod interface and an eight-speaker stereo. While it offers plenty of passenger space, reviewers say that its cargo space is merely average for the class.

  • "The 2013 Volkswagen Touareg delivers a surprising level of luxury and makes a formidable competitor to established high-end marques." -- Edmunds
  • "With its rigid body structure, supple suspension, strong engines and tasteful appointments, VW's Touareg provides an unusually rewarding driving experience for something called an SUV. Then fold in the traditional SUV qualities of hauling ability and all-weather security and the package becomes quite irresistible. Volkswagen's decision to add a torquey turbodiesel and an amazingly fast hybrid to the powertrain menu makes it even better." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "With the … Touareg, though, Vee-Dub has not only acquiesced to hybrid demands but has also built one of the best gas/electric vehicles on the market." -- Car and Driver (2011)
  • "There's a lot of variety here with the three powertrain configurations, and the hybrid is one heck of a satisfying drive." -- AutoWeek (2011)

Other Luxury SUVs to Consider

If you like the Touareg Hybrid’s fuel economy but want to spend a little less money, the regular Touareg with the diesel engine costs less and gets up to 20/29 mpg city/highway. Reviewers also love its abundance of torque. Otherwise, the two are very similar and are available with the same features.

If you don’t mind spending a little more money, you may like the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid. The two models actually have the same powerful hybrid powertrain and achieve the same fuel economy. However, reviewers give the Cayenne Hybrid a bit more praise for its athletic handling. It has slightly less cargo space than the Touareg Hybrid, however.
