Used Car: 2013 Volkswagen Touareg Review
Most critics liked the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg’s refined cabin and strong performance, but it does little to stand out in a competitive class.
The 2013 VW Touareg comes standard with a six-cylinder gas engine, though a six-cylinder diesel engine is available. There is also a hybrid model, which is reviewed separately. No matter which engine powers the Touareg, reviewers agreed that there is plenty of power. With the diesel engine, that good power is combined with EPA-estimated fuel economy of 20/29 mpg city/highway, which is great for the class. Touareg models with the gasoline engine get an EPA-estimated 17/23 mpg, which is OK for the class. Most test drivers said the 2013 Touareg has good on-road handling, with plenty of steering feedback for the driver. Several added that the Touareg is a competent off-road SUV as well.
The design and materials in the 2013 VW Touareg earned praise from reviewers, who said that the cabin is upscale, attractive and comfortable in both the front and back seats. The Touareg’s overall cargo space is low for the class. Standard features include Bluetooth, a touch-screen audio system, iPod integration, leatherette upholstery and a power liftgate. Available features include navigation, leather upholstery and a rearview camera. A couple critics mentioned that controlling the audio system is harder on models that have a navigation system than those that don’t.
Other SUVs to Consider
The 2013 Acura MDX has more seats than the VW Touareg, as well as more cargo space. While it may not be great for off-roading, reviewers said the MDX has excellent on-road performance and easy-to-use interior tech features.
The 2013 Infiniti FX has performance that test drivers said is very sporty, and its available V8 engine provides incredible acceleration, according to reviewers. Reviewers also liked its upscale cabin and straightforward navigation system.
