Used Car: 2012 Volvo S60 Review

Review Last Updated: 6/19/14

The 2012 Volvo S60 has excellent safety ratings, and reviewers liked its powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engine and attractive interior, but said its rear seat and trunk are not very spacious.

The 2012 Volvo S60 is ranked:

The 2012 Volvo S60’s base T5 trim comes with front-wheel drive and a turbocharged five-cylinder engine, and reviewers said its acceleration is sufficient and in line with class rivals’. The T6 and T6 R-Design trims have all-wheel drive and a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that test drivers agreed has more potent acceleration. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. The T5 gets an EPA-estimated 20/30 mpg city/highway, which is slightly low for the class. The T6 gets 18/26 mpg city/highway. Reviewers wrote that the 2012 S60 has a smooth ride, composed handling and precise, nicely weighted steering. Some noted that the S60 doesn't feel as lively as some rivals on curvy roads, and a couple critics commented that the brakes don’t provide much feedback.

Reviewers wrote that the 2012 Volvo S60’s cabin is well-built and attractive, with upscale materials and easy-to-use climate and audio controls. Test drivers remarked that the front seats are exceptionally comfortable and supportive, though they added that the rear seats can be a bit tight for taller adults. The S60 has 12 cubic feet of trunk space, which is on the low end for the class. Standard features in the 2012 Volvo S60 include City Safety, which can automatically apply the brakes at low speeds to help prevent a collision, leatherette upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system with a 7-inch display, an eight-speaker stereo system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD Radio and a USB port. Available features include adaptive cruise control, a moonroof, a rear-seat entertainment system, heated front seats, a 12-speaker surround-sound audio system, navigation, leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning and pedestrian detection with automatic braking.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2012 Lexus ES has an excellent reliability rating and one of the largest trunks in the class. Reviewers loved its comfortable ride and luxurious, beautifully designed cabin.

Automotive journalists said the 2012 Acura TL’s rear seat is larger than the rear seats in most competing cars. They were also pleased with the TL’s high-quality interior and impressive cornering ability, especially models equipped with all-wheel drive.
