Volvo XC60 - What the Auto Press Says

The XC60 is Volvo's first entry into the luxury compact SUV segment. Test drives reveal it to be a promising new crossover with stylish looks and powerful performance.

A baby brother to the XC90, the XC60 competes against the BMW X3 and shares a platform with the Land Rover LR2. "Sleek styling and a solid set of hardware could make this Volvo's most popular SUV yet," says Edmunds. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and boasts plenty of hi-tech safety features. These include Volvo's new City Safety system, which reduces low-speed impacts by automatically braking when the SUV is traveling at speeds under 18 mph.

In final 2008 sales numbers, Volvo suffered the second largest drop-off of any major auto brand in the United States. French automaker Renault is holding talks with Ford about a possible purchase of Volvo cars. Some Chinese automakers have also expressed interest. Rest assured that even if Ford sells Volvo, owners won't notice much of a difference. Some dealerships could close, but all warranties would still be in effect.

  • "The new crossover offers every safety feature-some standard, some optional-you can think of, plus one you probably wouldn't. However, it's also good to look at, readily identifiable as a Volvo, handsome within, reasonably agile, and capable of holding its own in the 0-to-60 department." -- Car and Driver
  • "Even though it's Volvo's first foray into this growing segment, the XC60 is well-executed overall. From its stylish design and upscale cabin to its sporty performance and numerous safety features, the XC60 impresses in all the right areas. Its gas mileage, however, may be a sticking point for some." -- Cars.com
  • "To our eyes, the XC60 has the boldly athletic styling and lavish, spacious interior needed to compete in the so-called ‘Small Premium Utility' segment." -- MSN
  • "Hoping to build on its ‘safety first' image, Volvo has added measure of performance and fun to its newest vehicle, emphasizing styling, high-tech content, and all-around capability." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "By blending the latest safety technology with cutting-edge styling, the XC60 could become a must-have machine among the upwardly professional crowd with young family members. In the process, Volvo will protect its reputation as a provider of avant-garde transportation." - Wheelbase Communications
  • "[W]ith its solid practicality, luxury, and driving dynamics, the XC60 is a strong choice among premium SUVs. And its refinement and interior space make it a viable alternative to larger, more expensive vehicles for consumers who don't need to seat more than five passengers." -- The Examiner

XC60 Performance - NA

The XC60 provides surprisingly spirited performance for a heavy SUV. "Away from the safe haven of a closed circuit and out on the open road, the XC60 was a little gem," says AutoWeek. "The turbo six pulls strongly, and the handling was safe and predictable." However, a few reviewers say the engine could stand to use more horsepower. The XC60's fuel economy also leaves reviewers disappointed. Read More

XC60 Exterior - NA

The XC60 stands out from most SUVs with its especially sleek looks. MSN says it "has plenty of sizzle, even when viewed in static pose under the harsh lights of a sterile photo studio." Consensus is that the XC60 stands out but still retains the classic Volvo look. Read More

XC60 Interior - NA

The 2009 Volvo XC60's cabin is both luxurious and comfortable. "The surfaces inside the cabin are nicely finished, with a visually interesting mix of contrasting materials, including leather, soft-touch plastics, brushed metal, and wood," says Automobile Magazine. Reviewers are also impressed with the XC60's cargo space. Read More

XC60 Safety - NA

The 2009 Volvo XC60 has not yet been crash-tested by the federal government or insurance industry. Carrying on Volvo's reputation, it comes with plenty of safety features. "Indeed, it wouldn't be a Volvo without a ton of safety equipment -- this is being called the safest car yet," says AutoWeek. "Volvo even went so far as to christen it ‘probably the safest car in the world.'" Its safety equipment includes City Safety, Volvo's newest innovation. Read More

XC60 Reliability - NA
