Test drivers agree that 2014 Volvo XC60s cabin features premium materials and a modern design, but how does it perform on the road.
Hi! I am Jim Sharifi, Senior Editor with U.S. News Best Cars. In this video, we will take a closer look at XC60s performance.
The Base Volvo XC60 has a 3.2 liter six cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower, higher trims have turbo-charged 3 liter six cylinder engines that produce 300 or 325 horsepower depending on the trim.
A six speed automatic transmission is standard and the upper trims have a sport mode with paddle shifters. The Base XC60 gets an EPA estimated 18 miles per gallon in the city and 26 on the highway.
With the turbo-charged 3 liter engine the fuel economy drops slightly to 17 and 24. Test drivers describe the base engine as adequate but they prefer the optional turbo-charged engines which provide ample power and peppy acceleration. They note that the standard six speed automatic transmission is generally smooth, but sometimes has a hard time finding the right gear when climbing hills. The XC60 earns praise for its controlled handling and firm yet comfortable ride.
Critics say the available all-wheel-drive system seamlessly provides traction when needed, while quick steering and a small turning circle make the XC60 easy to maneuver in tight spaces.
