Used Car: 2013 Volvo XC90 Review

Review Last Updated: 1/30/15

Poor reliability, underwhelming performance, cramped rear seats and dated tech features make the Volvo XC90 a poor choice for a midsize SUV, according to critics.

The 2013 Volvo XC90 comes standard with front-wheel drive, an automatic transmission and a six-cylinder engine. All-wheel drive is available. Base models get an EPA-estimated 16/23 mpg city/highway, which is fairly typical for the class. Test drivers reported that the engine lacks power and said the XC90 feels slow to accelerate. According to most reviewers, the Volvo XC90’s handling is biased more toward comfort than agility, and the steering feels numb. The 2013 XC90 has a poor reliability rating.

Most auto journalists said that the 2013 Volvo XC90’s cabin looks stylish and has upscale materials. The seven-seat Volvo XC90 has front seats that reviewers said feel supportive, but critics said the second- and third-row seats are too small for adults to sit comfortably. Reviewers also complained that the available navigation system seems dated and that its controls are in an odd place on the back of the steering wheel. When all seats are in use, reviewers complained about the lack of cargo space in the 2013 XC90, however overall cargo space with both the rear and middle rows folded is fairly good for the class. Standard features include a USB port, Bluetooth, leather upholstery and rear parking sensors. Available features include navigation, a rearview camera, a 12-speaker Dolby Pro Logic surround-sound audio system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

Other SUVs to Consider

The 2013 Acura MDX also seats seven, but it has a better performance score than the XC90, as reviewers said it has poised handling and sufficient engine power. Reviewers said the MDX’s interior tech features are straightforward, and the MDX has a better reliability rating than the XC90.

For a reliable SUV that has a smooth ride and seats five, consider the 2013 Lexus RX. Its ride is comfortable and quiet, according to most reviewers. It also has an excellent reliability rating and gets good fuel economy for the class.
