In some cases, you can save even more. For instance, Ford is offering up to $3,500 back to customers who buy the 2009 Mustang using cash. And, in some regions, you can finance it for zero-percent APR for up to 72 months and still get $1,000 cash back. What’s more, active members of the military or a police association take an additional $500 off the price of new vehicles with Ford's appreciation bonus cash programs.

With poor sales and the need to sell off 2009 models to make room for the 2010s, dealers are willing to bargain. Arming yourself with the right information puts you in a terrific position to negotiate. A good way to start is by reading up on your car of choice and comparing model-year differences.

For example, most trims of the 2010 Ford F-150 haven’t changed since 2009. So by opting for a 2009 model over a 2010, you’ll be eligible for greater cash-back incentives and more affordable financing rates without having to sacrifice any cool features. The same, however, can’t be said for the Mustang -- which received extensive changes for 2010.

At first glance, Chevy’s offering of zero-percent financing for 48 months sounds more attractive than Ford’s deal of 4.9 percent APR for 48 months plus $1,500 cash back. However, after doing the math you’ll find out that you actually have a lower monthly payment and save more by opting for the Focus.
