Best Jeep Deals: February 2010 Lease and Purchase
Last Updated: Feb. 02, 2010
Jeep dealers have grown used to bad news by now. Auto sales typically hit a low point in January. It’s expected. But last month, Jeep sales were truly dismal. While most of the auto industry -- including troubled Jeep parent Chrysler -- saw an uptick in sales compared to January of last year, Jeep sales fell yet again. Few buyers made their way into Jeep dealerships in January, and there’s little reason to expect them to start showing up in larger numbers this month.
That means, however, that if you are looking to buy a Jeep this month, you will start from a strong negotiating position. Dealers, facing the prospect of few customers, will do what they can to keep your business.
The home office is doing what it can to support them. While Chevrolet, Ford and other automakers have dialed back on hefty cash-back rebates, Jeep is still offering up to $4,000 off many models this month. Interest-free financing for up to 60 months is also available for those who qualify.
There’s more help for your monthly budget as well. Jeep is offering free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles on most of its products.
Shoppers interested in a Grand Cherokee or Commander should note that Jeep has a surprising number of 2009 vehicles remaining. Those cars weren’t redesigned for 2010, so those 2009s are virtually identical to the 2010s rolling into dealership lots to take their places. Dealers may be willing to take a lower offer on an ’09 -- and you’ll lose nothing by buying the car with last year’s date on the sticker.
Current Toyota owners have additional discounts to consider. Those trading in a Toyota Tundra, Tacoma or Sienna qualify for an additional $1,000 rebate on any Jeep product. We should note, however, that dealers are likely to offer you less than your Toyota trade in is worth, hoping to capitalize on the negative publicity surrounding Toyota’s massive recall campaign. Don’t accept a lowball offer. Experts believe that the resale value of most Toyota products will take a temporary hit from the news, but is likely to recover. Don’t let the dealership talk you into taking a low offer for your trade-in, then turn around and sell it at full price in a few months. Those looking to trade in a used Toyota should shop it around to several dealerships, including used vehicle outlets like Carmax, before accepting the dealership’s trade-in offer.
SUV shoppers might want to look, however, at GM’s stable of sport ‘utes before settling on a Jeep. Our Chevrolet Deals page shows that few of GM’s incentives beat what Jeep has on the table, but many Chevrolet SUVs outperform their Jeep counterparts in our ranking lists, and what you pass up in cash-back, you could save with Chevy’s 0% APR financing..
