BMW Launches Distracted Driving Campaign

BMW will release this print advertisement as a part of its "Don't Text and Drive" campaign.

In a new initiative, BMW seeks to combat distracted driving, and will launch “DON’T TXT & DRIVE – When the Engine Starts the Texting Stops” this June, just in time for the summer driving season.

BMW’s campaign will be “comprised of television, print, online and radio advertising and a strong in-dealership message” and has gained U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s support. "Distracted driving is an epidemic in America, and it has deadly consequences for thousands of people on our roads each year," LaHood states in a BMW press release. "Putting a stop to these needless deaths, as well as hundreds of thousands of injuries, will require everyone to take personal responsibility for safe driving. I am grateful to BMW for their efforts to raise public awareness about distracted driving and for urging drivers to put down their phones and focus on the road. I hope that other automakers will follow their lead.”

Cell phones make it easy for drivers to multitask. In 2009, 20 percent of injury crashes involved distracted driving, and of "those killed in distracted-driving-related crashed," 995 involved cell phone distraction, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It’s easy to eliminate distractions at the wheel. Wait until you park your car to respond to a text message or return a phone call. If you have to respond right away, find a safe place to pull over before picking up your phone.
