Chevrolet Announces Pricing for 2012 Sonic

General Motors has announced that the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, due in dealerships this fall, will have a starting price of $13,735 for sedan models. That’s about $1,800 more than the outgoing Chevrolet Aveo, which it replaces, and about $1,300 more than the base Ford Fiesta, another affordable small car. Inside Line writes, “The Chevrolet Sonic has the Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit in the crosshairs when it comes to pricing.” But while the Fiesta’s starting price is lower, its list of standard equipment lacks features like power windows. Base Sonics, on the other hand, will come with power door locks, remote keyless entry and OnStar, according to Consumer Reports.

Chevrolet has also announced that the Sonic hatchback will start at $14,935, only $165 less than the Honda Fit, and a full $565 less than the Ford Fiesta SE Hatchback. The Sonic hatchback offers a maximum of 30.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, but it’s easily outstripped by the Honda Fit’s cavernous capacity of 57.3 cubic feet. The Fit also comes standard with even more features, like cruise control, speed-sensitive volume control and a whopping 10 cup holders, so for shoppers looking to get the most out of their hatchback, the extra $165 might be worth it.

As it gets closer to the car’s fall launch date, more members of the automotive press should be able to get their hands on a Sonic, but as of yet, only a few have driven it. So far, reviewers are impressed with the Chevrolet Sonic’s stylish interior, and Car and Driver says it drives pretty well for an affordable small car. Small-car shoppers looking to buy American should be pleased with the car as well. With the Sonic, GM is “the first—and only—manufacturer to build a subcompact in the U.S,” reports the Wall Street Journal.
