GM Offers Free Maintenance on Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

Shopping for a used car can be a daunting task, especially since prospective owners don’t always have the same warranty coverage that comes with new cars. General Motors is looking to change all that with a revamped certified pre-owned program that includes vehicle maintenance.

GM's new certified pre-owned program is available on cars like this Buick Regal.

“Owner Care, a first in the certified pre-owned vehicle industry that includes a two-year/30,000-mile standard vehicle maintenance program, will cover oil changes based on each vehicle’s Oil Life Monitor system, tire rotations, and multi-point vehicle inspections at no charge to the customer,” says General Motors in a press release. Certified Pre-Owned Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles will continue to offer a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty with 24-hour roadside assistance.

GM says that under the new program, cars will also be subjected to a more rigorous, 172-point inspection, up from 117 points. Additionally, CPO vehicles will also carry free trials of OnStar and Sirius XM Radio. Autoblog writes, “The General hopes that the program will increase the value of the Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle program, while also lowering the total cost of vehicle ownership.”

The program may be appealing to shoppers looking for used cars that have the assurance of an extended warranty, but GM also wants to change the way people think about used cars. “By backing its CPO vehicles with a standard maintenance program, GM says it’s offering more value to CPO customers, who in the past may not have known the difference between a CPO and used car,” reports Automobile Magazine. “By dropping the term ‘used’ from the program name itself, GM likely hopes to move away from the used car image, instead following a path that other brands have blazed with their CPO programs.”
