Volkswagen Prices 2012 Beetle
Volkswagen announced pricing on the 2012 Beetle Tuesday, which will go on sale in October. “The new Beetle will start at just $18,995, offering an agile, driver-oriented coupe that respects the Beetle’s past yet looks to the future,” says Volkswagen in a press release.
Some analysts think that pricing the new Beetle a tick less than $19,000 was a smart move. “Volkswagen carefully priced the redesigned 2012 Beetle under the critical $20,000 mark and in the middle of the pack in terms of its competitors,” writes Edmunds. “In comparison, the base 2011 Mini Cooper starts at $20,100. The 2012 Fiat 500 starts at $16,000.”
The base model features a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that Volkswagen says offers a 10 percent increase in fuel economy over the 2010 model. Buyers will be able to choose between a standard five-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic transmission. It comes standard with a folding rear seat, eight-speaker stereo with auxiliary input, 17-inch wheels and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Available options include Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, heated seats, leatherette seating and ambient interior lighting.
If you’d like a more performance-oriented version of the Beetle, Volkswagen will also offer it with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment for $23,395. An optional six-speed DSG automatic transmission will be available, and the 2.0-liter turbo Bug adds Bluetooth, foglights, an iPod connection, sport seating and larger brakes with red calipers to the Beetle’s list of standard equipment.
A TDI clean diesel version of the Beetle will also be released in 2012, which will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 140 horsepower. Volkswagen says this “will be the most fuel-efficient Beetle ever, with an expected highway estimate of 40 mpg.” Pricing and release date of the diesel Beetle have yet to be announced.
