Audi to Debut New S Models at Frankfurt Auto Show
Audi’s sedan lineup has seen some big changes for the 2012 model year. We’ve already test driven the redesigned A6 and the new A7, but if you’re looking for a luxury large car or super luxury car that packs more performance, the automaker is set to bring new versions of the S6, S7 and S8 to the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
Audi says in a press release that all three cars will use a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. “At the top of the heap is the new S8 sedan, which adopts the new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that Audi has developed with Bentley, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox,” writes Autoblog. The new S8 generates 520 horsepower, which Audi says is enough to make the flagship sedan sprint from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.2 seconds.
S6 and S7 models will get a detuned version of the same engine, which generates 420 horsepower in both models. Both cars also come with an S tronic seven-speed transmission and quattro all-wheel drive, and Audi reports that the combination is good for zero-to-62 mph times of 4.8 and 4.9 seconds in the S6 and S7, respectively.
But these high-performance sedans are equipped for more than just straight-line acceleration. Edmunds explains, “The S models share some common elements, notably sport-tuned adaptive air suspension with variable damping, larger wheels and tires (19- and 20-inch rims on the S6/S7, 20s and 21s on the S8), subtle visual enhancements and an array of cutting-edge driver-assistance systems.”
Additionally, Audi says that fuel economy is up with the new engine. “Compared to the engine in the previous model, the free-breathing, 5.2-liter V10, it offers even sportier performance while reducing fuel consumption by as much as 25 percent,” writes Audi. “Average fuel consumption is just 9.7 liters per 100 km (24.25 US mpg) in the S6 and 9.8 liters (24.0 US mpg) in the S6 Avant, well below that of the competition.”
Pricing on the new S models has yet to be announced, but shoppers can expect to see the all-new S6, S7 and S8 hit dealer showrooms in the spring of 2012.
