BMW Discontinues ActiveHybrid X6

There are few SUVs like the BMW X6 on the market, and one of its variants, the ActiveHybrid X6, won’t be available in the United States for the 2012 model year.
 
“The ActiveHybrid X6 is one of the last non-General Motors models to use the two-mode hybrid system that was jointly developed by BMW, GM and then-DaimlerChrysler,” writes Inside Line. “Chrysler dropped its Durango and Aspen hybrids shortly after production began, and Mercedes-Benz phased out the ML-Class hybrid earlier this summer.” That means BMW is retiring what is considered the most powerful hybrid on the market.

Automobile Magazine adds that the “discontinuation will not affect the availability of the ActiveHybrid7 or BMW’s plans for an ActiveHybrid version of the 5-Series sedan.”

The 2011 ActiveHybrid is very expensive, and Kicking Tires speculates that price and fuel economy are two reasons why BMW is discontinuing the model. “Part of the problem may have to do with the hybrid system’s emphasis on power over efficiency and price,” Kicking Tires says. “Case in point: The 2011 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid starts at $88,900.”

According to the EPA, the ActiveHybrid averages 17/19 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive and a turbo V8 engine that makes 480 horsepower. The ActiveHybrid makes more horsepower than the 400-horsepower X6 xDrive50i, which averages 14/20 mpg city/highway with a 4.4-liter V8, making the ActiveHybrid the least fuel-efficient version on the highway. The xDrive35i averages 16/23 mpg with a 300-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine.
