Kia Recalls 10,631 Sorento Models
Kia is recalling Sorento models from the 2007 to 2008 model years because the front passenger airbag could be turned off even when an adult is sitting in the front passenger seat. About 10,600 Kia Sorento models are affected by the recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains that “the front passenger air bag is designed to be turned off in limited circumstances including when children and small adults are seated in the front passenger seat, there is a child restraint in that seat or the seat is not occupied.” If the Sorento’s Occupant Classification System (OCS), which classifies the front seat passenger’s weight, turns the front passenger airbag off, adults could be in danger if they are in a crash.
Kia dealers are currently reprogramming affected OCS systems for free, and Kia encourages Sorento owners to contact them at 1-800-333-4542 if they have questions. The recall campaign number is SC076. You can also reach NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236, or visit www.safercar.gov.
