2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Gets Lifetime Battery Warranty

2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Hyundai is covering the lithium-polymer battery pack in its 2012 Sonata Hybrid with a lifetime warranty. The automaker hasn’t said whether or not the lifetime warranty will also cover hybrid-related components, like the hybrid starter generator or power control unit.

Hyundai Motor America President and CEO John Krafcik told Car and Driver that Hyundai can offer this lifetime warranty because the Sonata Hybrid’s powertrain has been tested for more than 300,000 miles and the battery pack’s “failure rate is so low.”

Hyundai has not said whether the new battery pack warranty will apply to Sonata Hybrid models already purchased, nor has it given an exact date as to when the new warranty will go into effect. Hyundai says it will announce the full warranty coverage for the 2012 Sonata Hybrid soon. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid previously had a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty for the hybrid components, which includes things like the battery pack, generator and transmission. All Hyundai vehicles also come with a five-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid’s new battery warranty will reportedly last for the life of the car. “If the battery fails, the company will replace it and take care of any recycling costs,” Cars.com reports.

Hyundai’s new lifetime warranty aims to calm hybrid car shoppers’ fears surrounding the battery packs. “The concern evolving around hybrid cars has always been the life and durability of their battery packs, which stemmed from the fact that batteries inevitably die out at some point,” egmCarTech reports.
