2012 Volkswagen Passat Earns Highest Government Safety Rating
In composite tests, the 2012 Passat also earned five stars in front and side crashes, but received a slightly lower score of four stars for rollover risk.
As of yet, the 2012 Volkswagen Passat is one of several midsize cars to earn the coveted NHTSA rating. Other affordable midsize cars with the five-star overall rating include the 2012 Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Kia Optima, Kia Optima Hybrid, Toyota Camry, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Toyota Prius.
NHTSA is expected to release scores for 74 vehicles this year. The organization says this includes 42 passenger cars, 22 SUVs, two vans and eight pickup trucks. The crash test data will cover 81 percent of 2012 passenger vehicles, and rollover risk data will cover 92 percent of 2012 passenger vehicles.
The 2012 Passat’s standard safety features include six airbags, anti-lock brakes, hydraulic brake assist and Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System. In an accident, the system automatically shuts off the fuel supply, unlocks the doors and turns the hazard lights on.
