BMW ActiveHybrid 5 to Start at $61,845
BMW has announced pricing for the 2012 ActiveHybrid 5, which starts at $61,845, including destination charges. Based on the 535i sedan, the ActiveHybrid 5 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and an electric drive system that generates a combined 335 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission provides power to the rear wheels.
BMW says in a press release that the ActiveHybrid 5 can operate in all-electric mode at speeds up to 37 mph. The lithium-ion battery gives the hybrid sedan an all-electric range of up to 2.5 miles at an average speed of 22 mph. BMW writes, “Conversely, the powertrain system can combine the engine and electric motor torque to accelerate the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.”
The ActiveHybrid 5 will give luxury large car shoppers a new hybrid option when it goes on sale in late spring, but it will also command a base price that’s $7,250 more than the Infiniti M Hybrid. Pricing of upcoming hybrid competitors such as the Mercedes E-Class Hybrid and the redesigned 2013 Lexus GS 450h have yet to be announced.
