2013 Scion FR-S Priced at $24,200
The base four-seat, rear-wheel drive FR-S has a six-speed manual transmission that’s mated to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Choosing the six-speed manual transmission, which comes with paddle shifters, adds $1,100 to the FR-S’ bottom line before destination fees.
The EPA estimates that with the automatic transmission, the FR-S will get 25/34 mpg city/highway and 22/30 mpg with the manual transmission. Those are good fuel economy ratings for an affordable sports car, but the FR-S does require premium fuel.
The 2013 Scion FR-S’s main competitor is the 2013 Subaru BRZ, which is mechanically and cosmetically identical except for brand-specific badging and interior trim. Aside from its Subaru twin, the other natural competitor to the Scion FR-S is the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which is also rear-wheel drive and starts at $24,250. The Genesis Coupe’s base 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine makes 74 horsepower more than the 2013 FR-S’ four-cylinder engine. The Genesis Coupe’s optional 3.8-liter V6 engine makes up to 348 horsepower.
The 2013 Genesis Coupe and the 2013 FR-S have similar standard interior features. Standard on the FR-S are a Pioneer stereo, a USB port, HD radio and Bluetooth, which is a good number of standard features for the class. The Genesis Coupe isn’t available with a Pioneer stereo, but it does come with a USB port, Bluetooth and satellite radio. Navigation and an Infinity sound system are optional on the Genesis Coupe.
The 2013 FR-S comes standard with six airbags, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, anti-lock brakes and smart-stop technology, which reduces engine power when the brake and accelerator are pressed at the same time.
