Scion Will Reportedly Axe xB, xD

2012 Scion xD

The Scion xB and xD will reportedly be discontinued when their current generations end, according to WardsAuto, though Scion has not officially confirmed the termination of either vehicle. WardsAuto spoke with Scion Vice President Jack Hollis, who said that Scion has no plans to replace the two vehicles directly.

Sales of the boxy Scion xB are up 2.6 percent in the first quarter of this year compared with the same time period a year ago. “A model like the xB was always going to be a love-hate proposition, and indeed, the subcompact sharply divided opinion because of its t-square styling and funky stance back when it was introduced in 2004,” Autoblog writes.

Scion xD sales were also up in the first quarter of 2012 by 1.1 percent. Despite the sales increase for both the xD and xB, they are nowhere near the sales level of more mainstream cars like the Toyota Camry, which made its way into 105,405 driveways so far this year.

Scion’s decision to potentially discontinue the xB and xD may signal a change in direction for the brand. Automobile Magazine says, “With the introduction of the new Scion FR-S rear-wheel drive sports car, it is clear that Toyota is looking to inject some refreshed enthusiasm into its youth brand. If that’s the case, utilitarian yet funky boxes like the xB and xD may not be a good fit for the future of Scion’s lineup after all.”

If you like the boxy shape of the xB and xD, your other options if the vehicles are discontinued are the Nissan Cube and Kia Soul, both of which cost less than the xB and xD.
