Chrysler Group Expands Jeep Liberty Recall, Honda Recalls 2012 Civic

Honda and Chrysler Group issued separate recalls this week for the 2012 Civic sedan and 2004 to 2007 Jeep Liberty SUVs.

Chrysler Group expanded a recall issued in March, which initially applied to Jeep Liberty models from the 2004 and 2005 model years. Now, 2006 and 2007 Liberty models are included. The affected SUVs were sold or are currently registered in cold weather states. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the compact SUVs may have rust damage that could cause the lower control arm to fracture. If the control arm fractures, the driver may lose control of the car and get into an accident.

NHTSA reports that Chrysler Group is “aware of 83 incidents alleging rear control arm fracture (including complaints and field study results).” Despite the fracture incidents, Chrysler Group said in a statement that it is “unaware of any associated accidents or injuries.”

A total of 346,900 Liberty models are included in the recall, and were manufactured from July 3, 2003 through June 29, 2007. The recall began in March, and affected owners may take their Jeep Liberty to the Jeep dealership for a free replacement of the lower control arm. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.

In a separate issue, Honda is voluntarily recalling roughly 50,000 Civic sedans from the 2012 model year to replace the driver’s side driveshaft, which wasn’t assembled properly, and could separate while the car is being operated.

In a statement, Honda says, “If separation occurs, the engine will no longer propel the vehicle in any gear, and the vehicle may roll away if the parking brake has not been set when the gear selector has been placed in the Park position, increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.” Honda says there have been no reports of injuries or accidents.

Honda’s recall begins later this month and the automaker will notify affected owners by mail. If needed, Honda dealerships will install a new driveshaft for free. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 or visit www.recalls.honda.com.
