Mitsubishi i Electric Car Receives Four-Star Government Safety Rating
The all-electric 2012 Mitsubishi i earned a four-star overall safety rating from the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The subcompact car also received four out of five stars in front crash tests and rollover tests, and a lower three-star rating in side crash tests. NHTSA gives the 2013 i the same safety scores. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not tested the Mitsubishi i yet.
The 2012 Mitsubishi i has standard safety features that include six airbags, anti-lock brakes, a brake override system, electronic brake-force distribution and traction control, all of which are typical of cars in its class.
The i’s closest rival, the 2012 Nissan Leaf, received a better overall NHTSA safety score of five out of five stars. The Leaf earned five stars in side crash tests, and four stars in front crash tests and rollover tests. The Leaf is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick.
