2013 Buick Lineup Gets Standard IntelliLink Infotainment System

2013 Buick LaCrosse with IntelliLink

General Motors announced that the entire 2013 Buick lineup will come with Buick’s IntelliLink infotainment system as standard equipment, which includes Enclave, LaCrosse, Regal, Verano and Encore models. The IntelliLink system lets users connect their smartphones or iPods through USB and Bluetooth connections, which integrates the device into the vehicle’s touch-screen display. Additionally, IntelliLink integrates online music services like Pandora.

General Motors says in a press release that IntelliLink has been designed to minimize distractions by letting drivers keep both hands on the wheel as often as possible. To help achieve this goal, the system receives some updates for 2013, including the ability to tune to a Pandora station, or generate an iPod playlist based on the current song, by using voice commands.

“As smartphones that stream and hold music grow ever more popular, we want to ensure Buick customers have connectivity that’s both intuitive and safe to use,” said IntelliLink Lead Engineer Tony Kraatz. “These updates make it easier to access the songs they love.”

Edmunds points out that adding IntelliLink to the list of standard features may help the brand compete with the 2013 Lincoln MKS and MKZ, which both come standard with Sync and MyLincoln Touch. However, the MyLincoln Touch infotainment system was criticized last year for being difficult to use. With IntelliLink, Buick has created a support team that will help familiarize vehicle owners with the new system.

There’s some debate over whether or not adding IntelliLink to the list of standard features is a tactic to attract younger buyers. Laptop Magazine writes, “Including IntelliLink in all of its new vehicles makes sense for a company like Buick, which is trying to reinvent its image from that of a brand for folks in their late 60′s to one geared towards younger, tech-savvy car buyers.”

After speaking with Buick Spokesman Nick Richards, however, Edmunds reports that “IntelliLink isn't a carrot to draw younger buyers into the luxury brand beloved by senior citizens for its quiet ride.”
