2013 Mercedes E-Class Hybrid Priced at $55,800
Mercedes-Benz announced pricing on the all-new 2013 E400 Hybrid last week. The new luxury hybrid car will start at $55,800 plus a $905 destination charge, which is $4,800 more than the base 2013 E350 sedan and $3,600 more than the diesel-powered E350 Bluetec.
Although the E400 Hybrid is more expensive than other E-Class sedans, it undercuts rivals like the 2013 BMW 5-Series Hybrid and Lexus GS Hybrid, which start at $61,100 and $58,950, respectively. After destination charge, Edmunds points out that the E400 Hybrid is $5,290 less than the BMW and $3,140 less than the Lexus. The 2013 Infiniti M Hybrid, however, starts at about $1,600 less than the E400.
Like the current S-Class Hybrid, the E400 Hybrid will feature a V6 engine and electric motor. However, with a 302-horsepower V6 engine and a 27-horsepower electric motor, the E400 is more powerful than the S400 Hybrid, which pairs a 275-horsepower V6 to a 20-horsepower electric motor.
Mercedes says it hopes to earn 24/31 mpg city/highway fuel economy ratings from the EPA. Still, some members of the automotive press think the money saved on fuel may not offset the E400’s higher base price, especially when compared with less expensive E-Class models. “The E350 BlueTec is rated for a slightly lower 21 mpg in the city, but betters the hybrid’s estimated highway performance by 1 mpg,” writes Car and Driver. “Needless to say, it’ll take a while—plus a good amount of city driving—to recoup any of the added cost over the diesel E350, let alone the gas E350.”
The E400 Hybrid’s predicted fuel economy also falls short of EPA estimates for the 2013 Infiniti M Hybrid and Lexus GS Hybrid, which are rated at 27/32 mpg city/highway and 29/34 mpg, respectively.
The 2013 Mercedes E400 Hybrid is slated to hit dealerships soon, as the automaker announced that it would be available in summer 2012.
