572,000 Honda Accords Recalled

2007 Honda Accord

Honda is recalling about 572,000 Accords over a potentially faulty power steering hose. The recall affects Accord models with V6 engines from the 2003 to 2007 model years. In a statement, Honda says that “Over time, exposure to high under-hood and power steering fluid temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate and develop a fluid leak.”

Such a leak could lead to a loss of power steering assistance or even an engine fire, if fluid were to leak onto a catalytic converter. Honda says that one engine fire has been connected to the issue, but knows of no reports of any crashes or injuries.

This recall is actually an expansion of an earlier recall, wherein about 53,000 Acura TLs were recalled for the same issue. Affected TLs include 2007 or 2008 models.

In late October, Honda will mail affected Accord owners with information about the recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says there are not yet enough replacement parts for the Accord to begin performing the repairs. A sufficient quantity of parts should be ready in early 2013. In the meantime, Honda requests that Accord owner who think their car is exhibiting symptoms of a power steering fluid leak go to their local dealer for an inspection and interim repair.

There are enough parts for the affected Acura TLs, and owners who haven’t already had the problem repaired can do so now.

Affected owners can visit www.recalls.honda.com or call (800) 999-1009 and select option 4. Concerns can also be directed to NHTSA at www.safercar.gov or by calling (888) 327-4236. The recall number for affected Acura TLs is S39, and the recall numbers for affected Accords are S59 for inspection and S60 for repair.
