Ford C-Max Energi Earns Higher MPGe Rating than Prius Plug-in, Volt
If you’re shopping for a hybrid car, you may be aware that the Ford C-Max Hybrid earns better fuel economy estimates than the Toyota Prius v. Now, Ford has announced that its upcoming plug-in hybrid, the 2013 Ford C-Max Energi, is officially rated at 108/92 MPGe city/highway, or 100 MPGe combined.
Ford points out that the C-Max Energi’s EPA estimates beat the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s combined rating of 95 MPGe, and the automaker also notes that the C-Max Energi offers significant fuel savings when compared with most cars on the road today. Ford’s Chief Nameplate Engineer for the C-Max Energi, John Davis, says, “With $5-per-gallon gasoline, C-MAX Energi customers essentially will pay $1.25 per gallon for the same distance traveled compared with average vehicles estimated to achieve 23 mpg.”
While the C-Max Energi’s estimates are better than the current crop of plug-in hybrids, your fuel economy may depend on how far you drive. “Since drivers typically plug in overnight and can run a certain distance -- 20 miles in the case of the C-Max -- before the juice runs out and the gas engine takes over, gas mileage will vary,” says USA Today. “Those with short commutes will get dramatically better plug-in results than those with long ones.” In comparison, the Prius Plug-in can travel 11 miles on electric power, while the Chevrolet Volt can travel 38 miles without its gas engine kicking in.
The 2013 Ford C-Max Energi will go on sale this fall with a starting price of $33,745 (including destination). After an available federal tax credit of $3,750, the base C-Max Energi will cost $29,995. If you qualify for the full tax credit, the C-Max Energi’s starting price undercuts both the Prius Plug-in and Volt. The 2012 Prius Plug-in starts at $32,760 before a $2,500 tax incentive, which can lower its price to $30,260. The 2013 Chevrolet Volt is available with up to a $7,500 tax credit, which effectively lowers its base price to $32,495.
