Internet Campaign Wants to Give Joe Biden the 'Bird

It's tough out there for used car shoppers. But, someone who (as far as we know) isn't even in the market for a used car may end up getting one: Vice President Joe Biden.

A May, 2009 article in The Onion, a satirical newspaper, reported that Vice President Biden enjoyed washing his 1981 Pontiac Trans Am in the White House driveway. "While it was all a joke, the fictional story has captured the attention of several Biden fans who have set up a fundraising page and generously donated money in an effort to buy the VP his very own Trans Am," reports MotorTrend.

The fundraising campaign began as a discussion on fark.com, a news aggregation and discussion site. Now, the group has raised nearly $8,000 toward a Trans Am for Biden. "The sad reality is that a bunch of stupidhead 'anti-corruption' laws limiting gifts to officeholders will probably prevent Old Handsome Joe from actually taking possession of the car," writes Wonkette. "But the goofballs from Fark hope maybe he’ll wash it in the White House driveway before they auction it off and give the proceeds (and any other funds from this campaign) to four charities: Doctors Without Borders, GLAAD, The Wounded Warrior Project and The Biden Breast Health Initiative. And then they’ll give the Veep a diecast scale model of a similar vehicle."

Though the fundraising campaign takes a popular Internet meme to the next level, Biden may not mind. According to a 2011 interview with Yahoo! News, Biden thinks The Onion's story is "hilarious." The Vice President is also an aficionado of classic American muscle. In a September, 2011 interview with Car and Driver, he spoke about his father's work as a manager of GM, Ford and Chrysler dealerships. He also spoke of his own 1967 Corvette, complaining that, "The Secret Service won’t let me drive it. I’m not allowed to drive anything. It’s the one thing I hate about this job. I’m serious."

Prices for a 1981 Trans Am on Auto Trader Classics currently range from $9,000 to $19,800. You can find out more about the campaign at Buy Vice President Biden a TransAm.
