Toyota Recalls 2.5 Million Vehicles in the U.S.
Toyota is voluntarily recalling 2.5 million vehicles in the U.S. and 7.43 million vehicles worldwide for a potential safety issue with the power window master switch. USA Today writes that the switch “may stop working in more than a dozen models, produced from 2005 through 2010.”
The automaker says in a press release that the driver’s side power-window switch may feel “notchy” or sticky during use, and that attempts to fix the issue with commercially-available lubricants could result in “melting of the switch assembly or smoke could occur and lead to a fire under some circumstances.”
Toyota says that no crashes have been reported as a result of the defect. However, NBC News reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) compiled over “200 reports of problems involving the defective switch including fires, though there are no known crashes or injuries.”
Vehicles subject to the recall in the U.S. include:
- 2007 to 2008 Toyota Yaris (110,300)
- 2007 to 2009 Toyota RAV4 (336,400)
- 2007 to 2009 Toyota Tundra (337,100)
- 2007 to 2009 Toyota Camry (938,100)
- 2007 to 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid (116,800)
- 2008 to 2009 Scion xD (34,400)
- 2008 to 2009 Scion xB (77,500)
- 2008 to 2009 Toyota Sequoia (38,500)
- 2008 Toyota Highlander (135,400)
- 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid (23,200)
- 2009 Toyota Corolla (270,900)
- 2009 Toyota Matrix (53,800)
Toyota recalled a total of 14 million vehicles between 2009 and 2010 for unintended acceleration, as well as other safety issues. NBC News says, “The massive size of the newly announced recall underscores the risks manufacturers like Toyota face when they share basic components on a wide range of vehicles hoping to improve manufacturing economies of scale.”
If you own a Toyota or Scion that’s affected by the recall, the automaker will inspect and disassemble the switch, and apply a special fluorine grease at no charge. Toyota says that it will begin sending notification letters to vehicles owners in late October, and that the repair will take one hour, depending on the dealer’s schedule.
