2013 Toyota RAV4 Priced Higher than Honda CR-V

Toyota has announced pricing on the redesigned 2013 RAV4, which will go on sale shortly after the new year. The base RAV4 LE will start at $24,145 (including an $845 destination charge) and come with standard features that include a six-speaker stereo with a 6.1-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth and USB connectivity and a backup camera.

After destination charges, the mid-level XLE trim starts at $25,135, and adds alloy wheels, fog lamps, dual-zone automatic climate control and a power moonroof to the RAV4’s list of features. The top-tier Limited trim tacks on a power liftgate, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery and a power-adjustable driver’s seat for a grand total of $27,855. Optional features include navigation and an upgraded stereo, as well as blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert systems.

All models come with a 2.5-liter four cylinder engine, which is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available on all trims for an additional $1,400. According to the EPA, the RAV4 gets 24/31 mpg city/highway with FWD, while AWD models get 22/29 mpg. Those estimates are in the same ballpark as SUVs like the Honda CR-V and four-cylinder GMC Terrain, but rivals like the Mazda CX-5 and the upcoming Buick Encore get more miles per gallon.

While the redesigned RAV4 comes with more standard features than many affordable compact SUVs, it’s also priced higher than some of the highest-ranking models in the class, as well as the outgoing 2012 model. After you add an automatic transmission, the base CX-5 starts at $955 less than the new RAV4, while the base Ford Escape rings in with a base price that’s $850 lower. The CR-V closely matches the RAV4’s list of standard features and costs $520 less. Still, the RAV4 undercuts more expensive SUVs like the Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox.
