Goodbye BMW 3-Series Coupe, Hello BMW 4-Series

BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept

If you’ve been waiting for BMW to unveil the new 3-Series coupe to complete the redesigned 3-Series lineup, your wait was in vain. BMW announced Wednesday that when it goes in sale in 2013, the new BMW 4-Series coupe will replace the 3-Series coupe.

BMW hasn’t disclosed much information about the new 4-Series, but in a press release, the automaker says the 4-Series rides lower to the ground and has a longer wheelbase than the outgoing 3-Series coupe. “In concept form, the new 4 Series still looks pretty much like its four-door 3 Series sib, with a few flashy details as satin-finish aluminum bumpers and trim, plus twin circular LED headlamps,” says Edmunds.

Though there’s little information available, the automotive press thinks the current 3-Series powertrain will carry over to the 4-Series. According to Autoblog, that means “the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and 3.0-liter turbo-six from the 3 Series sedan will carry over.”

Several sources predict the 4-Series line will include more than just the coupe. The Los Angeles Times thinks the line could include convertible, X4 crossover, sedan and M4 models. Motor Trend expects the M4 to get a turbocharged, inline six-cylinder engine.

The automotive press has only peeked at the 4-Series’ interior, but they think what they've seen is attractive. “The interior certainly looks good, too – premium leather is slathered on nearly every surface, and the overall design is modern and plush,” writes Autoblog. “A lot of what we see here is similar to the larger 6 Series, again, but that isn't a bad thing. Specific details have not been divulged for the production 4 Series, but expect a full suite of technological goodies to be packed inside the cabin, as well.”

Pricing for the 4-Series coupe hasn’t been released, but the base 2013 328i coupe starts at $38,700.
