What to Expect at the Chicago Auto Show

The redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra goes on sale in September.

The Chicago Auto Show opened for the media Thursday, and the press gets the first peak at all-new or redesigned models like the Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel, 2014 Toyota Tundra and Kia Forte hatchback. Edmunds.com says that while automakers won’t have many big reveals at the Chicago Auto Show, it’s still an important event because consumers who attend the Chicago Show are often prepared to buy a new car.

Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel

2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel

When the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel goes on sale this summer, it will be one of four diesel models available in its class and the only diesel small car from an American brand. Chevrolet says in a press release that it will start at $25,695 including destination and will have a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine making 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The EPA hasn’t tested the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel yet, but Chevrolet expects it to get 42 mpg on the highway, which is just as much as the competing 140-horsepower, Volkswagen Jetta TDI. Other diesel models include the VW Golf hatchback and Beetle hatchback.

Toyota Tundra

2014 Toyota Tundra

Toyota revealed the 2014 Tundra full-size pickup truck Thursday morning, which is redesigned for the 2014 model year and goes on sale in September. The Toyota Tundra’s engine lineup, which ranges from a standard 270-horsepower V6 to a 381-horsepower V8, hasn’t changed. Aside from updated exterior styling, some of the most significant changes have been made to the features list. The entry SR model will have standard Bluetooth and a backup camera. Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are available on the Platinum and 1794 Edition. In a statement, Toyota says the Tundra is the first full-size truck to be equipped with these safety features, as well as the standard backup camera. Toyota hasn’t mentioned pricing for the 2014 Tundra, but the 2013 model starts at $25,445.

Kia Forte Hatchback and Kia Cross GT Concept

2014 Kia Forte Hatchback

Kia has updated the Forte hatchback, which has a new turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that makes 201 horsepower. Like many Kia models, the Forte hatchback comes well-equipped with standard features like Bluetooth, satellite radio and UVO infotainment system with a rearview camera. Kia says in a statement that the Forte hatchback hits the market in the third quarter of 2013. Pricing information isn’t available yet, but the 2013 model starts at $18,300.

Kia Cross GT Concept

One of the few concepts to debut at the Chicago Auto show is the Kia Cross GT Concept. In a press release, Kia calls it a “premium Crossover Utility Vehicle” and says it’s larger than the 2014 Kia Sorento midsize crossover SUV.  Kia hasn’t mentioned when or if the Cross GT Concept will make it to market but Auto Week says, “We rate the chances of this car going into production at close to nil.”
