Hyundai Recalls 260,000 Vehicles

2010 Hyundai Sonata (Hyundai Motor America)

Hyundai is recalling nearly 260,000 vehicles in two separate recall actions.

The first recall affects 239,000 Hyundai Sonata sedans from the 2006 to 2010 model years and Hyundai Azera sedans from the 2006 to 2011 model years in cold weather states. The affected vehicles were manufactured between Sept. 27, 2005 and Nov. 22, 2010. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel.” This could cause one of the suspension’s rear control arms to detach. This detachment could change how the vehicle handles and increase the risk of a crash.

The affected models were originally sold in or are currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

NHTSA says Hyundai will begin the recall by the end of September. The campaign number for this recall is 113. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-734-337-9499 for more information.

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport (Hyundai Motor America)

The second recall concerns 20,300 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport models with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine built between July 13, 2012 and March 12, 2013. According to NHTSA, the vehicle’s right front axle shaft may fracture due to a manufacturing issue. This could cause a loss of power to the wheels, or could cause a parked vehicle to roll away if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the chance of an accident.

This recall is expected to begin this month. The campaign number for this recall is 112. For more information, owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

Several sources, including The New York Times are reporting that Kia, Hyundai’s subsidiary, is also recalling about 9,300 2014 Kia Sorento models for the same issue affecting the Santa Fe Sport. A service bulletin has not been posted to NHTSA’s website as of this writing.

For any of these recalls, you can get more information by calling the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
