Chevrolet began shipping the 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe to dealers last week. According to General Motors, Chevy has produced about 1,000 Corvettes so far at its plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and expects most of them to arrive at dealerships in the next few weeks.

However, those itching to snatch up the $51,995 coupe may have to wait longer than that. The Detroit Free Press reports that some dealers will receive only one Corvette at first. Other dealers won’t receive their first ‘Vette for several months, as Chevy works to accelerate production.

Automotive News writes that Chevy is requiring at least one sales team member from every one of the 900 dealership that will sell the new Stingray to attend a two-day Corvette training seminar. Automotive News calls the move "unprecedented," and it could translate to a more knowledgeable Corvette sales force.

Car and Driver says that in their test the 2014 Corvette with the Z51 performance package got to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, besting the Porsche Boxster but falling short of the Porsche 911S and the new supercharged V8 Jaguar F-type. Echoing a number of publications, Car and Driver says that this seventh-generation Corvette outclasses and outperforms the sixth-generation model, and leaves them “feeling sorry for almost any car that meets it at a stoplight, the track, or a winding road.”

According to GM, the base 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray’s 6.2-liter V8 generates 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The rear-wheel drive sports car has a standard seven-speed manual transmission and an optional six-speed, paddle-shifted automatic.

The 2014 Corvette gets an EPA-estimated 17/29 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 16/28 with the automatic.

GM says production of the $56,995 convertible version of the 2014 Corvette Stingray will begin by year’s end.
