2014 BMW 4-Series Convertible Priced From $49,675
Our top-ranked upscale midsize car is about to lose its top, as a convertible version of the 2014 BMW 4-Series will hit showroom floors in the first quarter of 2014. BMW says in a press release, “The ‘4’ in its title headlines this new product line for the Convertible and emphasizes not only its stand-out design, but also the fact that any way you look at it, the new 4 Series Convertible represents something more than its BMW 3 Series cousins – 3+1, if you will.”
The 4-Series convertible will be available in 428i and 435i trims and feature a three-piece retractable hardtop like the outgoing 2013 3-Series convertible. The base 428i convertible will start at $49,675 and comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower. The 435i convertible will start at $55,825 and come with a 300-horsepower, turbocharged six-cylinder engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard and a six-speed manual transmission will be optional. Both models come with rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available on the 428i.
Both 4-Series models will be available with Sport, Luxury and M Sport packages. Edmunds writes, “Each variation combines both interior and exterior design cues that are unique to the specific package including wheels, bodywork and interior materials.” In comparison with the 3-Series convertible, the 2014 4-Series is slightly longer and wider, and the larger dimensions add up to more cargo space. The 4-Series convertible will offer 13 cubic feet of cargo space with the top up. Lowering the retractable hardtop reduces trunk space to 7.8 cubic feet.
The 4-Series convertible will have a slightly higher starting price than some luxury convertibles when it goes on sale early next year. Kicking Tires reports, “Competition from Audi (the A5 Cabriolet) starts at $44,245, including destination. The 4 Series Convertible’s other rival, the G37 convertible, is being remade into the Q60 convertible; specs and pricing for this model are unavailable.”
The 2014 BMW 4-Series convertible will make its formal debut next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
