Redesigned 2015 Subaru WRX Receives IIHS Top Safety Pick Award
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced that the redesigned 2015 Subaru WRX and WRX STI earned its Top Safety Pick award. Previous generations of the WRX have never been tested by the IIHS, and although it shares some similarities with the 2014 Subaru Impreza, the IIHS reports that “there are sufficient differences for the vehicles to be rated separately.”
The 2015 WRX earned the IIHS’ top rating of “good” in small and moderate overlap front crash tests, as well as side, roof strength and head restraint tests. “In the small overlap test, the structure of the WRX held up, and the driver's space was maintained well,” says the IIHS. “The dummy's movement was well-controlled, and measures taken from the dummy indicated a low risk of any significant injuries.” The small overlap front test also shows that the front air bag offered good protection, and that the side air bag deployed and provided sufficient coverage to protect the dummy’s head from the side of the WRX and objects outside the vehicle.
In a press release, Subaru of America President and Chief Operating Officer Thomas J. Doll says, "Safety is one of our brand tenets and so we are extremely proud to have earned a TSP rating for our performance models. We are committed to providing engaging driving together with safety and this award is testament to that commitment.”
Six Subaru models currently earn IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ ratings. Along with the 2015 WRX, the 2014 Subaru Impreza and XV Crosstrek are also Top Safety Picks. The 2014 Subaru Forester, Legacy and Outback earn Top Safety Pick+ designations when equipped with Subaru’s EyeSight system, which uses cameras to provide forward collision alerts or automatically apply the brakes if the vehicle is at risk of a crash.
